2023 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Contenders
Dr. Schivel - Trainer: Mark Glatt - Sire: Violence
A leading sprinter two years ago at age three, he missed by just a nose behind Aloha West in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in 2021. He was laid off over a year after running third in the Golden Shaheen (G1) in 2022, and came back in good form. His fifth-place finish in the Met Mile was against truly top-class horses over a distance that was too long, but his sprint form this year has been excellent, and he should be able to be a near the front from start to finish.
Elite Power - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: Curlin
Elite Power came into last year’s edition off of a win in a weak edition of the Vosburgh, but proved in the Breeders’ Cup and beyond that he was better than those foes. He does come into this race off of a defeat behind Gunite, who he faces again here. However, the turn back to six furlongs from seven benefits Elite Power, comparatively speaking. With plenty of speed entered in the race, as long as the racetrack isn’t completely unfairly speed-biased, he is the one to beat.
Gunite - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Gun Runner
He proved in the Parx Dirt Mile that he wanted no part of two turns, and now dials back to a one-turn trip. His comparative advantage against Elite Power in the Forego (G1) may have come with the distance; he set a slow pace going seven furlongs and had enough to keep motoring. This is a completely different race, shorter and more packed with speed. That sets up better for Elite Power and makes Gunite a bit of an underlay.
Hoist the Gold - Trainer: Dallas Stewart - Sire: Mineshaft
His visit to Del Mar this year was a dud, but Del Mar and Santa Anita can play very differently. He made better account when he visited Santa Anita, running third to Taiba in the Malibu in 2021. His Phoenix Stakes (G2) win was impressive, a career-best effort. But, he gets John Velazquez back, and if he runs back to that outing, he has a good chance to spice up the exotics.
Speed Boat Beach: Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Bayern
At a short price, be careful with this Bob Baffert trainee. He ran a good second to Dr. Schivel in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship last out, but that was his first start in almost eleven months. That was his toughest test yet, and now he has to run right back to that second off such a long layoff. That isn’t impossible, but anything close to his 3-1 morning-line odds is an underlay on that proposition.
The Chosen Vron - Trainer: Eric Kruljac - Sire: Vronsky
This California-bred has won eight straight races. The first seven in the streak came against fellow runners bred in the Golden State, but he then stepped up to Grade 1 company and beat good horses in Anarchist and Dr. Schivel despite having a rough trip. He is pace-versatile, he doesn’t need everything his own way, and he is excellent at Santa Anita. He can win this at a square price.
