2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Contenders
These are the leading contenders heading into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies:
Candied - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Candy Ride
She rallied from midfield to win a maiden sprint on debut at Saratoga, and then stretched out well to win the two-turn Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland. It was a good first two-turn try in a traditionally live race, though being buried on the fence in the biggest field she has faced to date is a big question mark for a horse who will be a short price.
Chatalas - Trainer: Mark Glatt - Sire: Gun Runner
The big question about her form was the flat effort in the Del Mar Debutante (G1), sandwiched between her debut and her victory in the Chandelier. The Chandelier was a solid effort, though: she set a pressured pace, cleared off late, and held Scalable decidedly at bay. She will need to build off of that when she rematches with Tamara, but the try over course and distance was a step in the right direction.
Just F Y I - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: Justify
She only has two starts, but she has yet to lay a hoof wrong in either of them. She got up by a head on debut over a fast track in a maiden special weight sprint at Saratoga, but really shined over a muddy mile at Aqueduct when she won the Frizette (G1). She is bred on both sides for the step up to two turns, and it is positive that she has shown tactical speed, though demand the price to cover for her lack of two-turn experience and the fact that she stepped up in the slop.
Scalable - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Speightstown
She will be a long shot because she is a maiden. However, she took a nice step forward from running off the board in a sprint on debut to finishing second with good late interest in the Chandelier (G2) behind Chatelas. She runs like a horse who is improving with time and distance, and though breaking her maiden in this race may be a big ask, her form and local experience could get her a piece.
Tamara - Trainer: Richard Mandella - Sire: Bolt d’Oro
A daughter of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Beholder by Grade 1-winning juvenile Bolt d’Oro, she has grown up as precocious and classy as both of her parents. She has won both of her races in stalk-and-pounce fashion, and overcome less-than-perfect starts to win both. She still has to prove herself at two turns, a worthy question to ask as she will be an odds-on favorite, but her pedigree supports the stretch out.
