2024 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf
Breeders' Cup Races
Updated June 29, 2024
Purse: $2,000,000
Distance: 1 3/16 miles
Grade: 1
Age: 3-year-old+ fillies & mares
Post Time: TBA
On the calendar since 1999, the Filly & Mare Turf is a race of huge international significance as it gives some of the best route fillies on the grass the chance to shine at Grade 1 level not just when trained in the US, but also those from France, England, and Ireland. The 2024 edition of the Filly and Mare Sprint happens Saturday, November 2, at Del Mar Racetrack, as part of the second day of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
The race varies in distance depending on the track where it is run. Some years, it covers 1 ¼ or even 1 ⅜ miles. At Santa Anita, it runs a moderate 1 ¼ miles. This gives the owners and trainers of fillies who are truly good at longer distances a tough decision: point to a longer distance and face males, or shorten up and stay amongst fillies and mares? This makes the race a true handicapping challenge.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf 2023 Contenders
These are the leading contenders in the field for the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf:
Didia - Trainer: Ignacio Correas - Sire: Orpen
A top turf horse in Argentina, she has risen to the top ranks in the United States this year as well. She can win from close to the pace or a few lengths back, giving her and jockey Vincent Cheminaud options. Cheminaud has ridden her in all her United States starts, too. Her last two races were excellent 1 ¼-mile efforts, including a win in the closure and distance prep last month, suggesting this is the time to try her on this class rise.
In Italian - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Dubawi
The leader of the filly and mare turf division last year, she missed by only a length to Epsom Oaks (G1) winner Tuesday in this race over a shorter distance. Her hand will likely be forced; she drew the fence and will probably have to gun it to the lead. The 1 ¼-mile distance is on the long side for her, meaning she will be underlaid in this spot.
Inspiral - Trainer: John Gosden - Sire: Frankel
She and Warm Heart are the class leaders in this field. Inspiral comes in on the strength of a pair of one-mile wins, in the Sun Chariot (G1) and the Prix Jacques le Marois (G1). She has top-level form over firmer turf, but distance is the question. Perhaps she can stretch out; the ground in California is quick, and Frankels often can. However, at the likely price, the distance issue is worth scrutinizing, especially since Warm Heart is such a proven 1 ¼-mile runner.
Lindy - Trainer: Brendan Walsh - Sire: Le Havre
Though Breeders’ Cup Mile entrant Mawj won the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, late-running Lindy made a tight race of it. She still has to prove she can stay this kind of trip, as she was a well-beaten eighth behind Blue Rose Cen in the Prix de Diane (G1). However, that was over soft going, and she may be able to come roaring home over this better ground third off the layoff.
Lumiere Rock - Trainer: Joseph O’Brien - Sire: Saxon Warrior
This Joseph O’Brien trainee, a three-year-old, has run well in two starts versus older at this distance. She finished a close third behind the top-class Blue Rose Cen in the Prix de l’Opera (G1) last out over soft ground, and romped in the Blandford (G2) over good ground two starts ago. A win over the likes of Warm Heart may be tough, but she is good enough at this distance to belong in exotics.
Warm Heart - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Galileo
Coming into the race off of wins in the Prix Vermeille (G1) and the Yorkshire Oaks (G1), this Aidan O’Brien trainee looks the one to beat. Her form over the distance is good, she has strong form over firmer ground, and she is well proven over this 1 ¼-mile distance. In a race with two top-class Europeans likely to battle for favoritism, she is the one to lean on.
