The Breeders’ Cup Classic is one of the most important races in the world. As the premier horse race for horses aged three and older, this event goes a long way towards deciding who will become 2024’s Horse of the Year. And, this year, it will be run at the picturesque Del Mar Racetrack.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic is always a puzzle: who has the class? Who has the mile-and-a-quarter stamina? Is there a new face or less-experienced horse who will get the right setup or thrive over the trip? In 2023, the race featured a few last-minute defections, so the race felt like it was in flux up until the last minute.

Breeders’ Cup Classic 2024 Odds
As Breeders’ Cup weekend is still months away, the odds and field won’t begin to take shape until later this year, so keep an eye on this page for future updates. In the meantime, what follows is our write-up for the 2023 race for posterity.
The final field for the Breeders’ Cup Classic was drawn on Monday, October 30. The morning-line odds were assigned on that date as well. A field of 13 originally entered, but only 12 are expected to run after Arcangelo was scratched and retired on Tuesday. Horses each get to move in one gate after Arcangelo scratched from the rail, though their wagering numbers remain the same as they were on draw day, and those numbers are noted here for betting convenience.

2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic Contenders
These are the leading contenders for the 2023 edition of the Breeders’ Cup Classic:
Arabian Knight - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Uncle Mo
He has raced just four times, ceding experience to the entire field. He showed in the Pacific Classic (G1) that he could stay 1 ¼ miles in gritty fashion, setting the pace, battling, and staying on to win by a neck. However, he is likely to get into a serious pace battle with Saudi Crown early, and at a short price, it is worth asking if that tires him out too much to stay on this time.
Bright Future - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Curlin
This lightly-raced four-year-old has just seven starts, but his star has risen sharply in his last two. He was heavily bet in the Jockey Club Gold Cup last out despite faltering in his only previous graded try, and held by a nose over the more experienced Proxy. The race came back fast, and he showed both tactical speed and grit. That suggests he has the tools for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and he’ll be a square price.
Proxy - Trainer: Mike Stidham - Sire: Tapit
This five-year-old has been a constant presence in top handicap-division races for the last two years. He got his Grade 1 in the 1 ⅛-mile Clark, but his 1 ¼-mile form has been solid: he missed by a nose to Bright Future in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) last out and was second beaten a neck in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) over the same course and distance as this race. Expect him to box on for a piece.
Ushba Tesoro - Trainer: Noboru Takagi - Sire: Orfevre
He was one of Japan’s best 1 ¼-mile dirt horses last year, with a 4-win campaign that culminated in a victory in the Tokyo Daishoten (G1). He is perfect in three starts this year, including a win in the Dubai World Cup (G1). Japan’s form at top international meetings deserves some respect, but the Dubai World Cup field was softer than usual this year, and even after defections, his price will be a serious underlay given the class jump.
White Abarrio - Trainer: Rick Dutrow - Sire: Race Day
The Florida Derby (G1) winner last year, he asserted himself as an older horse this year with a third-place finish in the Met Mile (G1) behind Cody’s Wish and Zandon, and then a 6 ¼-length blowout score in the Whitney (G1). His tactical speed should play well at Santa Anita, and even though he has been laid off since the Spa, he has been able to fire sharply off a layoff.
Zandon - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Upstart
Zandon snapped a year-and-a-half-long losing streak when he won the Woodward (G2) last out at Aqueduct. The mile and an eighth may well be his best distance, but he was third in both the Travers (G1) and the Kentucky Derby (G1) at the Classic distance and has made a career out of hitting the board against top handicap horses, This late runner could do that again at a price.
